The Scout Mountain Ultras are not your average trail race. Set in the rugged Caribou-Targhee National Forest outside of Pocatello, Idaho, these courses take you deep into wild terrain where the mountains write the rules and the weather keeps you guessing. One year you might be glissading down snowfields, another year you could be battling scorching heat. Either way, you’re in for an unforgettable mountain running experience.
Every distance here delivers big climbs, epic singletrack, and that raw wilderness feel. The legendary 100 mile course will test the toughest runners with more than 22,000 feet of gain. The 50 mile and 50 kilometer options dish out long days on snow, mud, and high ridges. And if you want to get a full taste of what Scout Mountain is all about, the 21 mile loop summits the peak itself with some of the best trails of the whole event. This race is as real as it gets—challenging, beautiful, and absolutely worth every step.

About Scout Mountain Ultras
Scout Mountain Ultras is an annual trail running celebration held in early June in the mountains of Pocatello, Idaho. With distances ranging from 23 miles to 100 miles, the event is designed to welcome runners of all experience levels, from first-time trail runners to seasoned ultramarathoners. Held across rugged and scenic terrain, the event blends physical challenge with spiritual renewal, celebrating the deeper meaning of running and time spent in nature.
What makes Scout Mountain Ultras truly stand out is its commitment to environmental sustainability and community equity. Race directors Luke and Tanae Nelson view the race as an “environmental event with a running problem,” donating proceeds to conservation organizations, reducing waste, and partnering with grassroots environmental groups. The race also prioritizes inclusivity, reserving 50% of spots for women, femme, and non-binary runners, and actively fosters a welcoming space for all identities.
Participants can expect stunning aspen groves, wildflowers, and expansive ridgelines—along with a strong community vibe. While crew access is limited and tightly managed for environmental and safety reasons, the event is well organized with detailed logistics and a clear focus on runner and volunteer care.
