National Public Lands Day — September 26, 2026
Hands Off Our Public Lands
Overview
Save Public Lands Day unites hikers, hunters, anglers, climbers, and outdoor lovers of every background around one shared belief: public lands should stay in public hands for generations to come. Organized with Duct Tape Then Beer, The Conservation Alliance, Outdoor Alliance, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, The Wilderness Society, and MeatEater, the campaign is gathering one million signatures on a letter demanding no more public-land sell-offs, no giveaways to foreign companies or billionaires, and no backroom deals that bypass public comment. On National Public Lands Day, supporters gather online and in person on public land to tell politicians and corporations to keep their hands off shared public lands.
Roadless Areas across Washington's national forests protect exactly the kind of wild, trail-accessible public land this campaign is fighting for.

What Can You Do?
The Roadless Area Conservation Rule has protected nearly a third of U.S. national forests and more than 43,000 miles of trails from road-building and logging for a generation. It's now under threat of removal.
Why it matters:
- Protects beloved outdoor destinations across Washington's six national forests, including Washington Pass, Baker Lake, Lake Chelan, Quinault Lake, and Silver Star Mountain
- Keeps drinking water clean for 80 million Americans nationally, including Washington communities like Leavenworth, Kittitas County, and Walla Walla
- Reduces wildfire risk — a 2026 Forest Service study found nearly two-thirds of human-caused fires start along roadsides
- Supports rural economies: outdoor recreation contributes $22.5 billion and 120,000 jobs to Washington's economy alone
