One of the toughest and most iconic mountain races in North America, taking place every July 4th in Seward, Alaska

Overview

Every Fourth of July, the small harbor town of Seward, Alaska, transforms into the epicenter of one of the most famous and challenging mountain races in the world — the Mount Marathon Race. With roots dating back nearly a century, this rugged test pits runners against a grueling climb and wild descent on the mountain that towers over Resurrection Bay. Men and women scale the full course while juniors battle halfway, each chasing glory, survival, or both. Whether you’re a seasoned Alaskan, an adventurous traveler, or someone with a strong sense of “why not?”, Mount Marathon promises adrenaline, grit, and a community celebration unlike any other.

Course

Elevation Gain2,974 ft
Elevation Loss2,974 ft
Max Altitude2,974 ft
Cutoff Time60 minutes to halfway point

The Mount Marathon Race is the ultimate short-distance sufferfest: a steep, unrelenting climb from sea level straight up nearly 3,000 feet, followed by a gravity-defying descent where sure footing and fearless speed matter equally. The uphill is a mix of rocky trail, loose dirt, and near-vertical sections that demand both strength and strategy. The downhill is legendary — a wild plunge through scree and chutes where runners practically surf on rock and soil. Spectators line the streets as racers sprint back into town, legs burning, covered in dirt, and grinning through the chaos. Juniors take on the same brutal ascent and descent to the halfway point.

Cutoff Details

All racers must meet the following cutoff times to earn an official race finish: Adult racers must cross the Junior Race Point (1/2 way up the mountain) within one hour (60 minutes) of their start time and must complete the race within 2 hours and 30 minutes. Junior racers who do not meet the following cutoff times will be turned around by a volunteer, have their parents contacted, and be escorted to the finish to meet their parents. – within 8 minutes, cross the gate by the picnic benches on Lowell Canyon Road – within 30 minutes, cross through Squirrels’ Inn (the unmarked “Beeline Route” is off-limits because it bypasses Squirrels’ Inn) - Juniors must complete the race in 1 hour, 30 minutes for an Official Finish. Any racer who continues on the race course after missing a cutoff time on the mountain may be disqualified from entering future Mount Marathon races.

Aid Stations

One aid station may be set near the top (Race Point) but availability depends on weather. If operational, it may offer water, Powerade, and medical support delivered by helicopter if needed. Runners must carry their own water and finish with all gear they started with.

At the finish line, runners are met with water, orange wedges, physical therapy, and medical services as needed. Spectators may offer water or sustenance on the course but not gear or clothing. Runners must finish with all gear they started with.

Non-Binary Division

In 2024, Mount Marathon introduced a Non-Binary Division for adult and junior runners who identify outside the male/female binary. The division has its own results and awards, following the same rules and recognition as the men’s, women’s, boys’, and girls’ divisions. Adults compete in the men’s or women’s waves (or an optional separate wave within those) based on credentials; juniors race in the combined junior wave. The policy is built on good faith and inclusivity, reflecting the race’s commitment to correcting inequities and welcoming LGBTQ+ athletes. Discrimination of any kind is not tolerated.

Kid & Youth Policy

Junior racers (ages 7–17) run roughly halfway up and back. There is a strict 8-minute cutoff to reach a key checkpoint.
